(40’s ): Blessings Come in Unexpected Places

📍 Oshawa

I start my week at the DMV, renewing my driver’s license. The line is long, my patience is short. I am dressed in my typical COVID wardrobe, yoga pants and a tank top. The Jerry Seinfeld quote is running through my head, “You know the message you're sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You're telling the world, 'I give up. I can't compete in normal society. I'm miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.”

From behind me a voice says, “You have beautiful auburn hair. Just like my Annie.” I turn around to acknowledge the unexpected compliment and find myself face-to-face with a gentleman in his 80’s. He introduces himself as Harvey and starts telling me about his wife, Annie.

He met Annie in 1955. He first saw her, and her flaming hair, across the library while in high school. They went to prom but lost touch after graduation. Forty years later, Harvey found himself divorced and reminded of Annie. He googled her and learned that she was widowed. He sent her a letter and they reconnected. They married in their sixties and have been living the dream for twenty years.

Blessings come in the most unexpected places. My wait at the DMV went too quickly as I talked to Harvey. He reminded me what I want. A best friend. A confidant. A fellow adventurer.

Marriage is a challenge. Seinfeld also says, “Marriage is like a game of chess except the board is flowing water, the pieces are made of smoke and no move you make will have any effect on the outcome.” So true. I’m not giving up through. It’s not too late to find my lobster.

Seeking my Harvey. Intelligent. Well-educated. Handsome. Articulate. Witty. Slightly sarcastic. Kind. Emotionally available. Well-read. Successful. Well-traveled. Curious. Sense of adventure. Likes hugs. EST.

Must love auburn hair.
